Broken Appliances: Repair or Replace?

Author: Administrator
There's so much to save when you protect household appliances. This is the gist of North Wales Chronicle's featured news article this week. It reported that "Breakdown repair services for domestic appliances have grown immensely ... This fast and effective service is highly reliable and gives households the protection they need. The breakdown services can cover all major household appliances, such as washing machines, hoovers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, ovens and much more." These repair services are gaining popularity because households have become more cautious and conscious of their expenditures.

In another press release, a UK appliance repair company has also urged the public to consider the option of washing machine repair rather than a new purchase. In the Small Business Newswire (, a press release featured an appliance repair firm in Texas that reminded consumers of one way to save a considerable amount of money: Keep appliances in good working order. And in cases of faulty appliances, don't toss them away; rather, look for appliance repair specialists that can work on any major brands and prepare a quote that's within the budget.

Basic Appliance Care Tips

To avoid the dilemma of fixing or replacing appliances, you should know how to take care of your appliances. Proper care will keep major appliances working better and longer. If you're wondering how you could prevent fixing or replacing appliances, here are some appliance care tips from "Angie's List" featured in KSAT 12 - San Antonio's Money section:

* Refrigerator/Freezer
oClean the condenser coils.
oCheck the door seal if it's still tight.
oClean the dishwasher's filter to remove particles and debris.
oUse the right amount and type of soap.
*Garbage Disposal
oDon't fill the disposal with food waste and then turn it on.
oRun cold water for 10 seconds before putting small bits of waste. Keep the water running while disposing waste and leave the water running 10 seconds after the waste disappears.
oCheck your oven's temperature gauge.
oUse the self-cleaner before important meals.
*Washing Machine
oDon't overload the machine by washing too many clothes in one spin.
oSet the water level at the appropriate setting for the amount of clothes being washed.
oEmpty pockets and put lingerie or thin/small items in mesh bags before washing.
oReplace water fill hoses every five years.
*Clothes Dryer
oClean the vent with every load.
oHave the outside vent dryad

Also, don't forget to read the user's manual of your appliances. A manual is provided for a reason - to know how to properly use the appliances. Following the factory-recommended preventive maintenance guidelines will make them functional and last for years.

But if the inevitable happens and you find your appliance broken down and yourself in a dilemma: replace or repair it. How would you know then whether to buy a new machine or hire an appliance repairs specialist? Here are some factors to help you decide:

*Age of the appliance
*Amount of maintenance received over its lifespan
*How long it's used
*How well it's performed

Whether you're looking into refrigerator or dishwasher repair, oven or washing machine repair, remember that if the repair cost will amount to more than half of buying a new one and your unit is more than five years old, then it's time to replace it.
